Impact Cluster: Onion farming for the Future – Developing a climate resistant onion value chain in Kayar, Senegal

Onions are one of the most popular crops in Senegal and of key socio-economic importance for its population. However, the country is largely dependent on onion imports while local production, mostly by smallholders, is faced with various challenges including poor agricultural practices, soil degradation and climate change.

Implemented by a cluster of Dutch and Senegalese stakeholders, this project aims to contribute to the development of a sustainable, climate-resistant onion value chain in Kayar region, one the country's key onion cultivation areas.

This should help to strengthen the market position of these smallholders and increase the self-sufficiency of Senegal in onion production.
