Dutch proposition green hydrogen (GH2) to South Africa

The Netherlands embassy in Pretoria, South Africa and Consulate-general in Cape Town, South Africa (the NL-mission network) are committed to partner up with South Africa in accelerating the energy transition to renewable energy sources. This includes the exchange of knowledge, technology and skills between the Netherlands and South Africa and promoting the development of renewable energy infrastructure, particularly in the field of green hydrogen (GH2), its derivatives, as well as applications.

The NL-mission network in South Africa aims at facilitating mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities between South Africa and the Netherlands and contribute to climate mitigation and Just Energy Transition. To this end, focused research into the market and investment opportunities and mobilization of Dutch businesses and knowledge institutes is needed. The project is a catalyst in the further development of the combi-track GH2 on South Africa.

The development of a successful GH2 chain is a priority area in South Africa, both for local use and application, as well as for export to Europe and the Netherlands. The NL-mission network aims to catalyze the development of GH2 in South Africa, as well as to strengthen relations between Dutch and South African stakeholders in this field.

Dutch businesses, investors and knowledge institutes attended the SA Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town in November/December 2022, as part of a trade mission. They had insightful exchanges with South African actors in the GH2 field and agreed that the next essential step is the development of a joint proposition from the Netherlands to South Africa.

This proposition should explain how and in which niches of the GH2 value chain, the Netherlands best suited to partner with South Africa.
