Diagnosis and monitoring of diseases

Core activities of Dutch Medical Devices B.V. (DMD) are co-development, medical certification and exploitation of medical devices for point of care use and home monitoring.

DMD's first product is the PC100. The device counts the number of platelets in a single drop of blood. When the blood platelet count is below 150,000, the platelet count is considered to be low, and the condition is referred to as thrombocytopenia, a common complication of malarial infections. A platelet count below 150,000 is indicative of malaria. Dengue is usually suspected when the platelet counts fall below 10,000 platelets per microliter of blood.

The objective of the demonstration project is to demonstrate that the PC100 is suitable for diagnosis and monitoring of tropical diseases (malaria and dengue fever) by medical personnel who are not highly trained and work outside of the laboratory environment. The PC100 has an accuracy of 97.5% and it only requires a single drop of blood, is accurate, cheap, portable and robust.
