Support Recife 2023 (DRR223BR2A)

An official request (Annex A) was made on the 27th of July by the Mayor of the Municipality of Recife via the Netherlands Embassy in Brazil to RVO. They have requested support of the DRR-Team on the effect of sea level rise and the impact on the drainage of the city.

The city of Recife has identified seven climate change problems and have asked the DRR-Team to support them with one of them.

The heavy rainfall in May 2022 has led to flooding, landslides and casualties. Recife is on the 16th spot of most vulnerable cities for climate change. There is infrastructure and policy in place on prevention and risk management, which needs to be brought up-to-date with focus on water and flood risk.

The DRR-Team should analyse the impact of sea level rise on the drainage of the city and propose strategies/solutions to the city of Recife with short term and long term options based on the various scenario’s.
