Feasibility Study Green Hydrogen in Jordan
In the Jordan 2020 – 2030 Energy Strategy, Green hydrogen is not yet included as a possible source of electricity supply. Due to the increasing population growth rates and the related increase in consumption of energy and water resources, Jordan faces a challenge to reduce GHG emissions. Therefore hydrogen-powered technology may very well constitute a secure, clean, and affordable alternative to fossil fuels.
Hydrogen production in Jordan is still in the research stage. Few experiments were conducted to investigate and improve the performance of hydrogen fuels and PEM electrolyser. With the high potential for renewable energy in the country, pursuing a green hydrogen path appears to be a fitting strategy for Jordan to attain a sustainable supply of energy domestically and strengthen its role as a regional energy hub. Furthermore, the production and utilisation/export of green hydrogen would contribute to employment generation and economic growth in Jordan.
Port of Rotterdam has put Jordan on their list of most promising countries for export of Green hydrogen to the Netherlands. In order to research the possibilities of producing green hydrogen in Jordan, an assignment for conducting a pre-feasibility study of green hydrogen opportunities for Jordan has been given to the Port of Rotterdam by RVO's Energy Transition Facility. The study will include a brief insight in the associated estimated costs, benefits and (environmental and social) risks involved, and a prioritization of possible technological and industrial pathways of Green Hydrogen. This green hydrogen study will be executed in cooperation with GIZ, located in Jordan.
