Digital innovation in monitoring & tracing

Child labour continues te be an important, yet often hidden, problem in worldwide value chains.

Monitoring child labour is challenging as:

  1. Information from plantation about child labour is limited,
  2. Plantation is not fully willing to combat child labour,
  3. Data collection and interpretation is not independent,
  4. Monitoring is often a snapshot, and
  5. workers and relatives are often hesitant to provide sensitive information.

With the use of technology (even with limited internet access) any local entity can report on child labour and has the information verified in a pseudo-anonymous way – a solution that is highly scalable, anonymous, sector agnostic and culturally embedded using the latest technologies. Project partners' solution is very cost-efficient and allows them to truly cover vast areas without the need of much additional manpower, having the potential of being a game-changer for monitoring in the developing world. The project is focused on tackling these challenges by using more sources, creating incentives to provide information, as well as increasing the independency, continuity and anonymity in monitoring. They use technology to support this goal taking into account literacy rates, access to technology and cultural styles.
