Sustainable water for inclusive Akagera Valley Improvement
The project will contribute to the improvement of the economic and social development of thousands of vulnerable hillside households along Rwanda’s Akagera river that have been affected by a combination of flood and drought problems. The project will implement sustainable integrated water management solutions in its marshlands and foothills aimed at increasing agricultural production, enabling inclusive business and valley development, and improving crop transportation conditions and facilities.
Note: The project never really started, mainly due to three subsequent years with excessive flooding during the rainy season (2018 – 2020). This excessive flooding, likely related to climate change, led to the insight that the area concerned furthermore was intrinsically unsuitable for sugar cane cultivation. The potential effect of such weather-conditions was identified as a risk in the project proposal. The fact that the project never started thus is a regular albeit undesirable outcome of the project.
