Sparkling from mine to consumer

The project works on setting up the eco-system for artisanal small scale mining (ASM) and distribution of responsibly mined low-and mid value gemstones in Tanga region, Tanzania. The aim is to create a living income for the ASM communities, to facilitate value addition activities and to empower young entrepreneurs in the gemstone and jewelry value chain.
These interventions create better market access for the miners on one hand and offers collective buying power of the buyers group that will be formed on the other hand. In order to make the sourcing and buying processes smooth and sustainable, structures are set up together with the miners associations, local authorities and international buyers group. Transparent processes include fair pricing and capacity building of the miner population to improve negotiation power. Capacity building for miners also includes financial literacy, health and safety and environmental knowledge. Moreover, a group of young entrepreneurs are involved in gemstone processing and cutting services, to increase local value addition and make the structure sustainable for the future. In the communication about the project, transparency, responsibility and awareness about small scale gemstone mining are the main subjects that will be presented by the project partners.
