Creating and capturing value (CAPVAL)
The project goals is to support and increase the interest of stakeholders in the public private sector in the commercialization of sustainable reuse and recycling of waste in order to reduce waste transport costs support the lifetime of landfills and reduce environmental impacts.
The project proposes 3 main components:
- A co-composting facility in Techiman which will annually transform 6,000 m3 of faecal sludge from public toilets and households and 300 tonnes of organic urban solid wastes (including e.g. market waste) into 200 tonnes of safe (pelletized) compost, under the brand name Fortifer. Drying beds are used for primary treatment of the faecal sludge prior to co-composting.
- A briquette plant in Afienya (Dangme West) to convert 3,300 tonnes per year of organic urban solid waste into 1,000 tonnes per year low cost fuel briquettes for use by business institutions and households.
- The production of African cat fish and or fish feed in well treated waste water in Kumasi to create enough revenue to cover the operational and maintenance costs of the treatment ponds.
In concept, all interventions will be supported by capacity building activities of public and private sectors.
The project creates direct employment for 200 people and more in the product distribution and retail chain primarily women.
