Spaans Babcock Waste B.V., Energy & Environment Project

The project distinguishes four key problems to be tackled that would much contribute to an effective solid waste management structure:

• Limited SWM and waste recycling capacity.
• Limited capacity of the local government (TMA) to provide adequate SWM services.
• High unemployment and unsanitary conditions in targeted communities.
• Shortage of electricity supply.

The ultimate objective of the project is to reverse this downward spiral and generate electricity, improve SWM capacities (knowledge and know-how) and customer services and provide employment in the solid waste sector. The intervention strategy is to realise a sustainable Waste to Energy Plant that includes a Pre-Treatment and Materials Recovery Facility, Plastics Buy-Back Centres and Customer Care. The activities will deliver new jobs and training opportunities. Over 8,000 households will receive bags to sort out plastic waste at the household source and receive additional income from sales. Hygiene improvement will be accompanied by better working conditions of primarily waste pickers and by providing residents training in occupational health and safety and registration with National Health Insurance (including free vaccinations).
