Babyviewer: improved antenatal care diagnostics for the poor

Applicants aim is to build a prototype of a cheap ultrasound device that will help midwives to assess whether a pregnant woman should be referred to hospital.

If successful, the project should result in reduced maternal disability and death through early detection of potentially dangerous pregnancies.
The automatic detection software is the most innovative part of the project.
The anticipated business model is described as a fee per scan model.

The project will:

  1. train midwives to use this basic ultrasound device,
  2. collect these ultrasound image data and use them to design software that assists midwives to use the device properly and automatically detect gestational age and potentially dangerous situations like placenta previa, breech and multiple pregnancies.
