Angolan Sustainable Avocado (ASA) cluster
The soil, water and climate of the West Angola highlands are very suitable for avocados. In the Angola climate, avocados can be harvested from October to January, which is after Peru, Kenya and South Africa, and before Spain, which will provide a stable worldwide demand. However, at the moment avocado production in Angola is very limited, using mostly locally commercially les viable varieties and not exporting, while global demand for avocados is rapidly growing.
Initially, three nucleus farmers and 45-90 smallholder farmers will show a proof of concept. Planting new trees, training, collection, cleaning and transport will be organised via the nucleus farms. This model will also allow for significant upscaling. Soil testing, certification and inputs will be organised through the cluster as well.
Transport will take place 150 km per truck and after that via reefer transport to Rotterdam.
After this proof of concept is successful, the activity can be scaled up and replicated, but also a new activity can be added, the production of avocado oil.
