RtF – Friendship
Note: Char islands are small, often temporary, islands that separate the river channels.
Friendship carries out the RtF project in the north of Bangladesh, in 20 char island communities. The geography of the char island is unique, with the char islands or communities disconnected by the river flow of the Brahmaputra.
Friendship aims to develop the landscape as one unit, while putting 20 villages on the the small islands in the lead. Those islands ultimately form the entire landscape, where life and livelihood is largely guided by the river and its flow.
These communities (in Shaheber Alga) are one of the most vulnerable unions of Ulipur upazila with poor socio-economic development, lack of communication – since the surrounding rivers severely disconnected them from the mainland –, and recurrent physical disasters (floods).
The intervention goal is to make the 20 villages more resilient to the changes which will continue to occur in this char island landscape and for Friendship, as the RtF hub, to develop a new way of working by putting communities in the lead.
If successful, it means that more villages can be reached by Friendship (and other actors).
