RtF – Kenya TUPADO

TUPADO will set up and implement an RtF project – Community-Led Ecosystem Adaptation and Restoration (Clear) – in Nanam, Songot Lopur and Nakalale wards in Turkana North and Turkana West Sub-Counties in Turkana County.

Located in an Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) area, these landscapes are characterised by low water tables, high salinity and unsustainable water use, poor underground water recharge, unsustainable land use practices occasioned by overgrazing due to high stocking rates and deforestation.

Other than the harsh climatic conditions, Turkana West and North sub-counties are also prone to natural resources related conflicts and cattle rustling resulting from resources competition from the neighbouring countries and unsustainable cultural practices. Turkana North and West is mainly inhabited by pastoralists and agro-pastoralists.

With TUPADO as a facilitator, the local community and local institutions will work together to reduce the vulnerability of the marginalised communities, improve their capacity for climate and disaster resilience, as well as support existing adaptation mechanisms.

Specifically, TUPADO will support community groups (Water Resource User Associations, Communal Forest Associations and Community Based Natural Resources Management groups).
