Transforming the cocoa sector in Indonesia through value addition for smallholders

The project works towards creating a transparent, sustainable and efficient value chain for high-quality fermented cocoa beans produced by 3,400 farmers in the Indonesian provinces of Bali, Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara.

High-quality fermented cocoa beans are ingredients for premium chocolate, a niche market in which manufacturers are paying premium prices for ingredients.

The project provides farmers, farmer groups and cooperatives with training, technical support and awareness raising, processing facilities and access to inputs, finance and markets.
As such, the project works towards increasing productivity and delivery of high-quality fermented cocoa beans which meet premium chocolate producers' standards.
The income of beneficiary farmers will increase as they will benefit from the pricing-advantage of the premium chocolate market.
