Reducing, reusing and recycling for sustainable waste management

The project's purpose is to transform the waste management supply chain of Yamoussoukro by improving the sorting, collection and treatment of organic waste. The organic waste, sourced from households, water hyacinths and agri-business, will be used for the energy neutral production of compost and bio-fertilizer.

The compost and bio-fertilizer are subsequently supplied to various food production systems, primarily for smallholder farmers in the cocoa value chain who by appropriate application of compost and bio-fertilizer will have an increased production and become more climate-resilient.

This will, among other things, result in:

• 3,000 ha farmland used more eco-efficiently by using less pesticides and less chemical fertilizer.
• 6,204 cacao farmers directly reached with increased productivity and income, due to improved access to compost and bio-fertilizer.
• 62 additional direct jobs supported for young adults.
