SPVO – Connecting the dots: Joining forces for a responsible local gold supply chain in Tanzania

The Dutch jewellery brand A Beautiful Story (ABS) together with the civil society organisations Solidaridad, the mining cooperative Mgusu mine, and the local jewellery producer in Dar-Es Salaam, Woow Me, are teaming up to build a more transparent, responsible, fair and ASGM (Artisanal and small-scale gold mining) inclusive  gold supply chain. This will specifically target locally produced jewellery that will be sold on the European market.

The key impact this project aim to achieve is to:

1. Contribute to increased value creation in Tanzania of the raw materials extracted in-country, ensuring it benefits back to producers in Tanzania and their surrounding communities, and;
2. Create a market – and market demand – for traceable jewellery that contributes to development in origin countries by showcasing this project as a successful proof of concept. 

Three thousand five hundred (3500) people are to benefit from the project, with a particular focus on women, children, community members, and mining workers.

This partnership gathers key stakeholders joining forces with a common goal:  to set up a supply chain where responsibly produced gold from a small scale gold mine will be crafted by a local jewelry maker and sold at the European market - telling the whole story by involving and benefitting all the actors in the supply chain. This initiative will showcase that it is possible to source materials and produce jewelry locally in a responsible manner. This will support the liaison with other international buyers that are willing to reward miners and jewelry producers for their efforts to produce responsible and traceable ASM gold.

With the aim of using gold from an ASGM demonstrating responsible production for future jewelry pieces, ABSwill support WooW me to improve their traceability and connect them with ASGMs demonstrating responsible practices.
