FLAG – Flooding and Groundwater (Pilot CVC Cauca)

The role of groundwater in flooding in Colombia and tools for its management: Pilot Project in the Valle del Cauca.

This project conducted by Deltares and Unesco IHE in cooperation with Fugro, Eijkelkamp and CVC Cauca will provide best practice guidelines to study the interaction between groundwater and surface water that can be further applied in other areas of Colombia, and for which Dutch companies can provide support, technology and advisory products.

Groundwater in Colombia has become a topic of national interest. Different public authorities such as the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Mining and Energy via the Geological Survey, the National  Institute for Hydrology and Environment , and the regional corporations are working on several initiatives for a sustainable groundwater management. These initiatives include the development of policies, plans, courses and databases. Naturally, groundwater has always been a concern for these entities because it is key resource in many areas.

However, in recent years specialists have pointed out that in some regions the mismanagement of lack of understanding of the groundwater has been one of the limitations for economic and social development of the region. Recognition of these limitations has triggered the desire to develop a more sustainable approach to managing groundwater.
