The Netherlands - Myanmar Poultry Cooperation

Myanmar is one of the least developed markets in the world, due to decades of stagnation and political and economic isolation. Population growth, urbanization, increasing purchasing power of a rising middle class, consciousness about food quality & safety and changing consumer preference towards protein-rich products will increase demand for poultry meat and eggs. Demand for poultry products is therefore expected to more than double within the next 10 years.

Consequently, enormous capacity expansion in domestic poultry production and slaughtering and (further) processing activities will be required. Furthermore, productivity will have to increase, among others by improving the knowledge level of those working in the poultry sector and introducing enhanced (knowledge-intensive) production systems. A consortium of leading companies and knowledge institutes from the Netherlands are committed to work together in strengthening the poultry sector in Myanmar. Larive International B.V. will act as coordinator of the partnership.

Based upon discussions with relevant stakeholders in Myanmar and Dutch poultry experts, the consortium has decided to specific pay attention on animal health, prevention, control and contamination of animal diseases, breeding, hatching, farm management and food safety. Furthermore, this project aims to improve sustainability within the chain, trigger and support entrepreneurship and share values about integer business practices and animal welfare. Core activities of the consortium are transfer of know-how (e.g. providing training programmes) and demonstration of best practices. The envisioned timeline to execute the activities within this project is 2.5 years (September 2015 - December 2017). Target groups are particularly middle management of domestically owned private sector parties (feed mills, broiler and layers farms and slaughter markets), government agency officials and university and vocational training institute lecturers, PhDs and (post-graduate) students. It is the ambition of the consortium to continue and extend the cooperation after completing the 2G@there OS project.
