Expanding access to diagnostics in Dnipro region for improved treatment and rehabilitation

The project's goal is to double the diagnostic capacity of the leading private healthcare provider in one of Ukraine’s largest regions and increase access to the medical services to improve lives.Nearly 1,500 hospitals in Ukraine have been destroyed or damaged between February 2022 and January 2024, because of the large-scale war by Russia. This created a large gap in access to quality healthcare. The health of the population has been significantly impacted. A large part of the population, most of which women, children, elderly and vulnerable, have been displaced. The Dnipro region is one of the top-3 of the 24 regions, and one of the most impacted ones. Dnipro region hosts about 360,000 of internally displaced people (more than 10% of the regional population). Alongside being the frontline region, this causes a significant increase in demand for healthcare services not possible to address by the local public healthcare facilities. The project will strengthen a part of the health care infrastructure in the Dnipro region. The project is the provision of medical equipment for the diagnostic and treatment departments of the private Garvis Medical Group in Dnipro city, to support rehabilitation with diagnostic services, and expand the diagnostic capacity. The project partner Garvis Company Group (Garvis) is a private Ukrainian healthcare provider with several locations in the Dnipro region, and a part of the national healthcare infrastructure. In collaboration with Philips Medical Systems Nederland B.V. (Philips) and AFS Medizintechnik LLC in Ukraine (AFS), Garvis will double its diagnostic capabilities, create additional jobs, and improve access to quality care. The project's scope:• the provision of new diagnostic and treatment equipment,• installation services,• training to staff on the use of the equipment.Social impact• The goal is to double the diagnostic capacity of the Garvis Medical Group and increase access to the medical service by the local and displaced population. The impact is enabling the more than 31,000 exams/procedures per year, including about 21,000 exams/procedures per year for women and children, and more than 7,600 of additional exams/procedures per year under the National Health Guarantees Program.• The project will create new jobs: Garvis will employ 38 additional people, mostly medical staff.• The project is in line with the priorities of the Ministry of Health to open rehabilitation facilities and increase available hospital capacity; it is also in line with the international donors' (WB, EBRD) aim of involving private sector into providing services for the State as a sustainable solution.Women, children and vulnerable population• Women and children account for about 70% of our patient pool, and this ratio is expected to sustain for the years to come. The medical services enabled by this project will be available for vulnerable categories and Ukrainian patients under the State Health Guarantee Program.Environment• The project includes eco-designed products with innovative technologies, that consumer less materials, energy and/or use less of scarce natural resources. The products have EcoPassports that confirm they have lower environmental footprint than their predecessors. Specifically• MRI that requires no helium gas refill and supply, has less construction requirements and has a lower installation and maintenance cost.• CT that has a robust tube technology 'Tube for life' and therefore, lower maintenance cost, a software upgrade program to stay up to date with future innovations without the need to upgrade the hardware, and a patient gantry controls that reduce the time to scan results by 19% and enables to serve more patients per day.• X-ray and stationary Ultrasound systems that consume more than 10% less energy per scan that their predecessor model.• Ambient experience and child-friendly solutions to reduce anxiety and stress about undergoing an exam, especially for people that suffer in mental health.Project sustainability• The equipment will be delivered and installed as part of this project. The medical staff will receive training in using the equipment right after its installation. Also, it will receive the necessary services in 3 years after the installation, as part of the warranty. Therefore, from there on, the hospital staff will be able to use the equipment to serve its patients. The average lifetime of the equipment is 7-10 years. This will also ensure working places for at least 38 people in Dnipro, and more than 31,000 exams/scans per year available for patients in Dnipro for next 7-10 years, with more than 7,000 exams to be provided under the National Program of Healthcare Guarantees.
