The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine has triggered a significant need for prosthetics and rehabilitation services. 1,577 Ukrainian medical facilities have been ruined or destroyed (Source: United Nations Human Rights monitoring mission in Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, The Office of the President of Ukraine).

More than 30% of Ukraine's territory is mined: over 174,000 square km. That's over four times the size of the Netherlands. Experts foresee an increase of 10,000 amputees per year if the war conditions continue. The existing Ukrainian state programme can provide prosthetics for only about 2,000 patients annually (as per 2024). Confidential data estimates that around 30,000 individuals need limb prosthetics. The Ukrainian medical system will not cover the full demand for prosthetics and rehabilitation services without foreign support.

The UPF subsidy enables the project partners to achieve their top strategic goals, including reconstructing a new rehabilitation center in Ukraine (at least 500 people per year will receive rehabilitation services and prosthetics), enhancing the qualifications of over 384 Ukrainian medical personnel through multidisciplinary trainings by Dutch experts from Basalt, Heliomare, Roessingh rehabilitation centers, University Medical Center in Utrecht (UMCU) and 3D Lab Radboud University, and creating a positive impact on Ukraine's economy by generating new jobs, improving existing workers' skills, reintegrating people with disabilities into active lifestyles, facilitating faster return to work for family members of people with disabilities, and enabling more people to receive medical care at home (not abroad).
