Solar Ukraine for Resilience In Water and Sanitation Services
The Solar Ukraine for Resilience In Water and Sanitation Services project (SUNRISE) is a renewable energy sector initiative that will design, supply, install and operate decentral off-grid and solar-backup solar-power solutions and battery storage in ten medium-sized towns in frontline regions that have not yet received support for their critical infrastructure power supply for water supply and sanitation. The project installs in total over 1 MWP solar power with integrated off-grid and backup capability. Each system is equipped with a sturdy lithium battery bank that ensures uninterrupted power supply during blackouts. The systems are grid interactive and are capable to export surplus energy into the grid, thus supporting grid stability and adding to overall sustainable power generation capacity in Ukraine. The project will improve the reliability of these services, improving the living conditions of 200,000 people and supporting long-term economic growth through 800 businesses and institutions. The proposed design provides a continuous power supply day and night, reducing the dependency on the often-unreliable grid electricity. It will produce reliable renewable electricity, with significant battery storage and backup capability, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project will support the capacity of partners in Ukraine to implement and operate the scaling up of renewable, distributed energy solutions during reconstruction in the country. In the SUNRISE project areas, which have been exposed to attacks on critical infrastructure such as power and water supply, this adds a new level of energy security and resilience to water and sewage system operators. The SUNRISE project is a collaboration between Independent Energy (The Netherlands), Lifeline Ukraine (Ukraine) and PVNP Nikointerm (Ukraine).
