HEART4U

The current local situation in Ukraine is characterised by critical vulnerabilities in energy infrastructure due to extensive and continuous attacks since the war began against Ukraine in 2022. This leads to long and frequent power outages, which are particularly damaging to healthcare services, as they disrupt essential medical equipment operation and medication storage that require stable temperatures.Currently, most Ukrainian hospitals rely on diesel generators, which come with high costs, limited runtime, and fuel dependency, and are insufficient for prolonged outages. Recent assessments indicate that 70% of hospitals in frontline areas lack reliable energy storage systems, resulting in significant operational strain. Additionally, these facilities face logistical barriers in fuel storage, exacerbating challenges in maintaining continuous power for medical needs. This project addresses these critical gaps by supplying 600 medical refrigerators, certified by the World Health Organization, capable of maintaining cold-chain conditions for 1-2 days without external power. These refrigerators offer a stable solution for temperature-sensitive medication and vaccines, ensuring effective storage amid frequent power disruptions. The main beneficiary of the project is the public healthcare system of Ukraine. Social impactThe UPF project in Ukraine strengthens health infrastructure and ensures access to life-saving medication in conflict-affected areas, supporting public health and social stability. By reducing medicine spoilage and healthcare costs, it contributes to long-term economic recovery, workforce resilience, and greater health equity for vulnerable populations.Project Sustainability and Long-Term ImpactAs part of this project, 600 medical refrigerators will be delivered, installed, and commissioned. Healthcare staff will be trained immediately upon installation to ensure proper use and handling. The equipment will be supported with ongoing service and maintenance until 2029. Each unit will be equipped with a temperature monitoring system connected to an online dashboard, enabling real-time 24/7 performance tracking and proactive maintenance. With an product lifespan of at least 10 years, the refrigerators are built for long-term reliability and impact.
