Serious Game for Climate Resilient Cities

As part of the Water as Leverage (WaL) Academy, a Serious Game has been developed by One Architecture & Urbanism to make the WaL methodology accessible, practical, and engaging for professionals and cities worldwide. The game introduces participants to the eight key principles of WaL and the steps for project development, offering a hands-on way to explore how water can drive climate resilience in urban contexts.

The Serious Game was co-created with WaL partners – including WaL Academy Bangkok, UN-Habitat, Deltares, and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) – and designed to be easily deployed and further developed by WaL partners and cities. It is available in English and Spanish, with materials that can be adapted for future translations and uses.

Through role play, collaboration, and scenario-based exercises, the game enables city leaders, planners, practitioners and other stakeholders to:

• Experiment with integrated solutions for water and climate adaptation.
• Experience the challenges of aligning stakeholders and finance.
• Learn how the Water as Leverage methodology supports innovative, sustainable, and inclusive project design.

The game is designed as an open resource, downloadable via this website, and can be played using only digital or printable materials. This makes it widely accessible for workshops, trainings, and knowledge-sharing sessions across different contexts.

By combining knowledge exchange with interactive learning, the WaL Serious Game strengthens the Academy's mission: to inspire, connect, and empower professionals and cities to co-create resilient urban futures.
